2023 AFCON Q: Benin fight from one down to keep AFCON hope alive

Having had an early qualification to the 2023 AFCON, Senegal was held back by the Benin via a one-all score this Saturday.

The game left Senegalese fans dissatisfied, with many critical of Aliou Cissé line up.

The Teranga Lions opened the scoring thanks to the opportunism of Abdoulaye Seck. The latter found the net just before the break and both teams returned to the locker room with a score of one goal to nil.

Upon resumption, Senegal dominated but without being sharp. Lack of efficiency that costed the Lions in the 78th minute. On a sumptuous strike from outside the penalty area, Rachid Moumini beat Seyni Dieng who could only see the the ball run through.

The Cheetahs’ goal came against the run play, which illuminated the Mathieu Kèrékou stadium.

It was Senegal’s first dropped points in AFCON qualification.

On her part, Benin, remains last in the group with 3 points, but keeps its chances of qualifying for the next edition of the Africa Cup of Nations in group L.
