Stephen Constantine Returns to Lead Rwanda’s Amavubi

The Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) officially announced on March 12, 2026, the appointment of Stephen Constantine as the new head coach of the senior men’s national team. The 63-year-old English tactician returns for a second tenure with the Amavubi, signing a two-year contract that includes an option for an extension

In a move to align the national team’s development, Constantine will also take charge of the Under-23 national side. This dual role is designed to bridge the gap between youth prospects and the senior squad, a task Constantine is well-acquainted with given his 30-year career of transforming underperforming programs across Africa and Asia. He replaces Adel Amrouche, who was dismissed following a period of inconsistent results.

A Familiar Face in Kigali

This appointment marks a homecoming for Constantine, who famously led Rwanda between 2014 and 2015. During that stint, he propelled the nation to its highest-ever FIFA world ranking (64th). His return is viewed by FERWAFA as a move to restore the tactical discipline and competitive edge he established a decade ago.

Constantine arrives with a rejuvenated reputation after recently leading Pakistan to their first-ever FIFA World Cup qualifying victory. His extensive resume also includes notable spells with India, Malawi, and Sudan, making him the most experienced English coach in international football history.

Immediate Focus: The FIFA Series

Constantine’s second era begins immediately. His first assignment is the FIFA Series, scheduled to kick off in just two weeks in Kigali. Rwanda will host a four-nation tournament at the Amahoro Stadium and Kigali Pelé Stadium, facing off against:

  • Kenya (CAF)
  • Estonia (UEFA)
  • Grenada (CONCACAF)

These matches will provide the new coach with a critical first look at his squad before they resume their 2026 FIFA World Cup and AFCON qualifying campaigns later this year.
