Nigeria Set to Host 2026 CAF Awards and General Assembly
African football powerhouse, Nigeria, will host both the 48th CAF Ordinary General Assembly and the 2026 CAF Awards. This major diplomatic and sporting victory was solidified during high-level discussions at the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi, Kenya, where President Bola Ahmed Tinubu met with CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe to finalize the hosting rights.
The decision represents a significant shift in the continental football calendar, as these flagship events move to West Africa after a multi-year residency in Morocco.
The upcoming schedule promises a massive year for Nigerian sports diplomacy, beginning with the 48th CAF Ordinary General Assembly in October 2026.
This administrative powerhouse will bring together the presidents of all fifty-four member associations, zonal union representatives, and top global football icons to deliberate on the future of the African game. Following the assembly, the focus will shift to the glamorous 2026 CAF Awards in December. Often referred to as the Oscars of African Football, this ceremony celebrates the continent’s elite players, coaches, and teams, providing a global stage for the brightest stars in the sport.
The significance of this development extends far beyond the pitch, as it serves as a strategic move for Nigeria’s international image and local economy.
This will be the fifth time Nigeria has hosted the CAF Awards, marking a prestigious homecoming for an event the country last held in 2017. Beyond the prestige, hosting hundreds of international delegates, officials, and media representatives provides a substantial boost to the hospitality and tourism sectors. There is also a distinct sense of home field anticipation, as Nigerian fans hope to see their own stars, such as Victor Osimhen or the record-breaking Super Falcons, lift trophies on home soil.
The success of the bid was the result of a collaborative effort involving officials, including Minister of Foreign Affairs Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, NFF President Ibrahim Gusau, and Amaju Pinnick, who serves as a Special Adviser to the CAF President.
The Nigeria Football Federation noted that the President’s approval reflects a growing continental confidence in Nigeria’s capacity to host major sporting events.
