Cairo Derby: Ahly Defeats Zamalek In 8 Goal Thriller

Al Ahly defeated bitter – rivals Zamalek (3-5) on Friday Nov. 6, on the occasion of match day 3 of the Egyptian championship.

With close to 200 domestic and international trophies between these two juggernauts, one was set to bow in a cold evening in Cairo.

It was set to be a hotly contested, and eagerly awaited affair with both
Al Ahly and Zamalek having had a strong start to the season, achieving six points out of their first two matches in the competition.

The men of Pitso Mosimane hit the front and stayed there with what has so far been described as a fast and furious 25 minutes.

The White Knights went down at the 16th minute, and in all truth, it was goalkeeper Ali Gabal who was credited for putting Ahly ahead with an own goal.

Tunisia’s Ali Maâloul quickly doubled the lead for Ahly four minutes on, before 25 – year – old Mohamed Sherif made it 3-0 as early as the 25th minute.

Mostafa Fathi scored after the break to give Zamalek some hope but his goal was quickly wiped out by Ahly’s fourth, courtesy Malian midfeilder – Aliou Dieng, at the 53rd minute.

10 time winners of the CAF champions league, Al Ahly looked to make the score embarrassing, and that was done at the 65th minute of the game, with Maaloul getting his brace.

Ahmed Sayed converted from the spot for Zamalek to take the game to 5-2, before Achraf Bencharki made the final minutes nervy, but the damage was already done.

Though early days in the league, Ahly go top with 9 points while Zamalek are currently ranked 5th.

Ahly will be looking to get back their crown lost to Zamalek, league winners last season.
