FIFA WC 2022 Draw: Previous Groups Of The Indomitable Lions From 1982-2014

The draw for the FIFA World Cup 2022 is upon us and it seems a period of nail biting even before the tournament proper, as fans of different national teams will like to avoid the so called ‘big boys’.

The draw is scheduled for 5 pm local time today in Doha, Qatar.

Astonishingly, Cameroon has been drawn in B 3 times successively from 1990-1998. Group B equally acts as the ‘lucky charm’ for the Indomitable Lions who have registered loads of success, losing 4 out of 9, and harvesting 7 points in the process. It was in group B that the Indomitable Lions marshalled their way through to the quarter finals in 1990.

The 5-time African champions have appeared in group A twice. It was on the occasion of their first, and most recent World Cup appearances in 1982 and 2014.

Cameroon has been paaired in group E twice (2002 and 2010).

1982

In 1982, Cameroon was drawn alongside; Poland, Italy and Peru. Cameroon drew all 3 games and was third in group A.

1990

Cameroon came back in 1990 after missing out in 86, and they were drawn in group B alongside; Romania, Argentina, and the then Soviet Union. Cameroon advanced after gathering 4 points, including a Victory against Maradona’s Argentina. Cameroon then made the last 8

1994

In 1994, Cameroon was drawn in group B, just like in 1990. The indomitable Lions came last in the group with one point (Sweden), as they lost the other 2 to Brazil and Russia.

1998

In 1998, Cameroon again appeared in group B. They were up against Italy, Chile and Austria. Cameroon exited the group with two points, with draws against Chile and Austria, and then, they lost 3-0 against Italy.

2002

In 2002, Cameroon was paired in group E where many expected them to make light work of teams like: Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Ireland. The Indomitable Lions however came up short despite their four points tally! Ireland and Germany went through as group winners.

In 2010, Cameroon appeared in group E again as they were drawn against the Netherlands, Japan and Denmark. It turned out to be a dismal world cup campaign. The Lions lost all three and ended bottom of the group.

In 2014, Cameroon was Lodged in group A alongside hosts; Brazil, Mexico and Croatia. Cameroon lost all her games and ended bottom of the group.

Cameroon has met twice before with Brazil, Russia and Italy in the same world cup groups.

One team from the four pots will be in each group. Five of the eight groups will have a maximum of two European teams, as 13 qualify. There can be no more than one team from any other confederation. So, for instance, the Cameroon cannot be drawn against Senegy, or Morocco.

World Cup 2022 takes place in Qatar from November 21 to December 18; 32 teams to compete in eight groups.
