CHAN 2022: Wasteful Cameroon Throw Qualification Away To Niger

Defeated by Niger (1-0) on Tuesday, the intermediate Lions of Cameroon have been eliminated from the 2023 African Nations Championship.

Cameroon wanted to do better than the fourth place obtained at the previous African Nations Championship. Instead, they have been eliminated in the first round of this 2023 edition.

It is a big disappointment therefore for the men of Alioum Saidou. Announced as favorites after their victory against Congo, the Cameroon needed a simple draw to progress to the quarter-finals. Cameroon struggled to find the spaces in defence despite the many chances.

Niger took advantage Cameroon’s lackluster nature and grew into the game. On a free kick on the edge of the “D” of goalkeeper Mbahbi, Badamassi’s strike was helpedon its way by Etta Bawak and it was 1-0, for Niger at the 69th minute. Niger therefore ends the group stage with 4 points, ahead of Cameroon (3 points). Group winners Niger will face Ghana in the quarter-finals
