AFCON 2021 Draws: 1 Balloon D’or Winner, 3 African Players Of The Year Confirm Presence

In view of the draws of Africa’s most celebrated competition, CAF has released a list of cult heroes and legends of the game, who will assist in the pre tournament ritual – in a little over a fortnight from now.

The list consists of; Samuel Eto’o, George Weah, Didier Drogba, Yaya Toure and Jay Jay Okocha.

Though their glory days are behind them, all these players left their mark in the competition and on the continent, in one way or the other.

Eto’o was voted four time African player of the year – (2003, 2004, 2005 and 2010), a record matched by Yaya Toure in the years (2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014). Drogba won the prestigious award twice, and George Weah is in a league of his own, having won the award thrice, plus, the Balloon D’Or in 1995; the only African till date.

Jay Jay Augustine Okocha’s skill is undisputed, despite the fact that he never won the Award of African player of the year. The man with the twinkling feet however, won the AFCON in 1994, and was beaten finalist in the same competition once, back in the year 2000.

The draws have been earmarked for August 15, 2021 in Yaounde – Cameroon, at the Congress hall.

The aforementioned guests of honour are expected to be in Cameroon a couple of days before the draws proper.

It has been like for ever, as the draws were initially scheduled for June 25, before the ceremony was postponed to a later date by CAF due to logistical problems related to the health crisis.

Douala, Bafoussam, Garoua, Limbe and of course, Yaoundé, are the host cities picked for the tournament.
