AFCON 2021: Le Coq Unleashes New Lions Kit

French Brand Le Coq Sportif has released photo sessions of how the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon will be dressed in the upcoming AFCON, to be played at home.

Cameroon is certainly one of the great favorites for the upcoming African Cup of Nations, which will be played in Cameroon from January 9 to February 6th, the orthodox date, coming back for the first time from the summer, with 24 Nationals at the start, divided into 6 groups.

This will be the brand’s second outing in an AFCON competition with the Indomitable Lions, after 2019.

The Lions were clothed by Puma for over 20 years prior to 2019. After 2 decades of PUMA sponsorship, the French brand Le Coq Sportif announced through a Twitter post that it will be the next technical sponsor of the “Indomitable Lions” national team.

Among the main teams that currently wear uniforms produced by Le Coq Sportif, there are South Africa, Saint-Étienne and Estac Troyes. The brand only made a return in 2019. in 1882, Le Coq clothed Cameroon during the 1982 World Cup.

Cameroon’s kit used at the 2019 AFCON finals in Egypt

The Indomitable Lions have experienced the highs and lows of sport wears in the past.

Cameroon headed to the 2002 AFCON in Mali African as one of the favourites.

That was a squad containing Rigobert Song in his prime, a young Samuel Eto’o, Real Madrid midfielder Geremi, a pre-Invincible Etame and Jacques Songo’o, who was arguably the best, then.

Eto’o and co needed a special kit for the occasion. Something allowing The Indomitable Lions to both stand out and thrive in Cameroon’s climate at its least hospitable.

FIFA banned the kit, with spokesman Keith Cooper saying: “They’re not shirts, they’re vests.”

So Cameroon headed to the 2002 World Cup with black sleeves under their kits.
