AFCON 2021: Mali Stunned By Equatorial Guinea

After a penalty shootout against Mali, Equatorial Guinea qualified for the quarter-finals of the 2021 AFCON. At the end of an unexciting match, the Eagles fell into the trap of the Equatoguineans.

Against all odds, Equatorial Guinea secured its ticket to the quarter-finals of AFCON-2021 on Wednesday January 26, beating Mali after post match penalties (0-0, 6-5 ). They became the last qualified team for the “top 8” of the 33rd AFCON edition in Cameroonian.

Despite two-missed penalties, young Equatorial Guinea goalkeeper, Jesus Owono, saved two decisive penalties, in addition to the attempt, fired high by the Malian captain, Hamari Traoré. Owono and co will try on Sunday (8:00 p.m.) to clinch a place in the semi-finals for the second time in their history after 2015, in their third participation in the AFCON. The dream continues for those who have already beaten defending champions Algeria in the group.

Next for Equatorial Guinea is Senegal. Senegal went past Cape Verde though under difficulty on Tuesday (2-0). And this tie will bring back good memories to Equatorial Guinea: during the 2012 edition, the latter won in the group stage against Mali (2-1).

It is a huge disappointment for Mali who came in as favourites against the 114th nation in the world. The men of Mohamed Magassouba struggled in the heat of Limbé. They will no doubt also regret some contentious situations which could have resulted in penalties in their favour.
