AFCON 2023 Q: After Aboubakar & Choupo-Moting, Toko-Ekambi Is Ruled-Out

Olympique Lyonnaise wideman on loan to Stade Rennes, Karl Toko Ekambi, has been ruled-out of Cameroon’s AFCON qualifiers double-header against Namibia on March 24 and 28.

The communications department of the Cameroon Football Federation aired the player’s unavailability 72 hours to the game.

“Indomitable Lions striker Toko Ekambi suffered from a strained hamstring contracted during the PSG # Rennes match on March 19 in Ligue 1 in France.

” checks were carried out by the medical staff of the indomitable lions who confirmed the injury which requires treatment and rest for at least ten days before a possible recovery.” A statement from FECAFOOT reads.

Earlier on Monday, Etta Bawak and Emmanuel Mahop were two locals brought in to replace Fai Collins and Choupo-Moting, who are all out of the clash against Namibia.

It is becoming a real squabble for the Indomitable Lions who will now be forced to play on March 24 without at least 4 regulars.

An official communication is awaited if indeed, Rigobert Song will give late shouts to other players on the waiting list.

Namibia face Cameroon away on 24 March before hosting the return leg four days later in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Namibia lie bottom of their qualifying group behind Burundi and leaders Cameroon.

The Brave Warriors campaign got off to a shaky start last year after being held 1-1 by Burundi, who subsequently lost their next match 1-0 to Cameroon.
