AFCON 2023 Q: South Africa climb Above Morocco in group K with 2-1 victory

South Africa on Saturday evening, June 17, produced an incredible performance on the pitch as they defeated 2022 World Cup semi-finalists Morocco 2-1 in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifying encounter.

Group K has three teams since Zimbabwe have been removed from the qualifying process through suspension.

Going into this encounter, the Bafana Bafana were unbeaten in 16 consecutive AFCON qualifiers on home soil, and they were tipped to get a good result against their visitors.

The hosts started the game impressively looking for an early goal, they got it in the 5th minute through an inexplicable own goal scored by Munir Mohamedi, from Tau’s cross.

The goal gave South African players more energy to attack their opponents, but they were unable to score another in the first half.

The Bafana Bafana players came out aggressive in the second half, and it took them only three minutes to score their second goal through Zakhele Lepasa.

Hakim Ziyech pulled one back for Morocco in the 60th minute and it was an excellent goal from the 30-year-old Chelsea winger.

Bafana Bafana worked out more opportunities midway through the second half, one coming through Tebeho Mokwena who skied his effort, one-v-one against Munir Mohamadi.

The match eventually ended 2-1 in favour of South Africa. Morocco will have a chance to regain top spot when they play against Liberia on September 4.
