AFCON 2023: Quick turn of fortune sees Ghana dumped out of AFCON
In a dramatic final round of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) group stage, Ghana were held by Mozambique 2-2 on Monday.
The result ensured that Egypt secured their place in the last 16 of the tournament.
The match kicked off with Crystal Palace winger Jordan Ayew opening the scoring for Ghana just 15 minutes into the game, converting a penalty.
Ayew continued to impress and extended Ghana’s advantage in the 70th minute, again from the penalty spot, with his second goal of the match.
However, Mozambique turned the tables on Ghana in injury time.
Geny Catamo’s penalty kick in the 91st minute brought hope to Mozambique, and just moments later, Reinidlo Mandava completed the comeback with a goal in the 94th minute, securing a draw for his team.
With this result, Ghana currently sits in third place in Group B with two points, trailing behind already qualified Cape Verde who have seven points and Egypt who collected three points.
