AFCON Group G Qualifiers: Dramatic late winner against South Sudan keeps Gambia alive

Gambia stole a dramatic stoppage-time victory over South Sudan on Wednesday, in the TotalEnergies 2023 AFCON qualifiers.

In a crucial African Cup of Nations qualifying match in Group G at the Suez Canal Authority Stadium in Egypt, the Gambia won 3-2 thanks to a 96th-minute winner by substitute Hamza Barry.

Gambia made the perfect start when South Sudan’s Rehan Angier put through his own net in the fourth minute.

Valentino Yuel equalised for the home team 16 minutes later as South Sudan chased a result which would maintain their slim hopes of qualification as the bottom-placed side.

Ablie Jallow nudged Gambia back ahead shortly after the hour mark, only for the Scorpions to feel the sting of a 91st-minute equaliser from Chol Peter Bentiu Daniel.

With both teams desperately searching for a winner, it was Gambia who found it in the 96th minute – Barry making himself the hero by netting seconds before the final whistle.

The Scorpions are temporarily in second place as a result of their win but could drop back down to third if DR Congo beat Mali on Sunday.

Depending on the final score in that game, Gambia may only need a draw to reach the finals in their last group-stage game against DR Congo on Monday, September 4.
