AFCON U17: Uganda breathes hope again after win over neighbors, Tanzania
Uganda’s 3-0 victory over Tanzania, their neighbours, on Match Day 2 of the TotalEnergies CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025, gave them optimism after their devastating opening loss to Morocco.
Richard Okello, James Ogere’s well-taken penalty, and goal from Simon Wanyama in the second half gave the Ugandans a decisive victory.
Early in the first few minutes, Wanyama, Bogere, and Isima Magala orchestrated some thrilling build-ups for their team, allowing the injured Ugandans to come off their starting blocks.
Tanzania attempted to breach the Ugandan defence but was unsuccessful due to poor decision-making.
Tanzania entered the match with similar injuries from a 4-1 loss to Zambia.
Nothing separated the two teams going into the interval, paving the way for an exciting second half. In the 61st minute, Wanyama scored the first goal, which would ease the Ugandans’ anxiety.
With five minutes remaining, Okello took advantage of a moment of inattention in the 85th minute to jump on a loose ball and put the game out of reach.
After Tanzania gave up a penalty in the final seconds, Magala easily scored the third goal, giving Uganda a sweet victory and complete control of the game. Uganda’s crucial victory puts them,
ahead of Tanzania, who are in last place and with their campaign hanging in the balance.
