Ahly come from a goal down to defeat Zamalek in derby
The Cairo Derby delivered another thrilling encounter on Monday, as Al Ahly staged a dramatic second-half comeback to defeat bitter rivals Zamalek 2-1 in the Egyptian Premier League. The match, which saw all three goals scored in a frantic period, was ultimately decided by the intervention of a game-changing substitute and a decisive penalty kick.
Zamalek struck first, taking the lead just after the half-hour mark through defender Hossam H. Abdelmaguid in the 32nd minute. The goal came from a retaken penalty, awarded after the initial spot-kick attempt was saved but the referee spotted encroachment by Al Ahly defenders. Abdelmaguid made no mistake with the second chance, slotting it home to put the White Knights ahead 1-0.
The game turned on its head in the second half following the introduction of Al Ahly winger Hussein El Shahat. The super-sub wasted no time, leveling the score for the Red Devils in the 71st minute with a powerful strike, making it Al Ahly 1-1 Zamalek.
The momentum had completely shifted, and just minutes later, El Shahat proved his worth again. He was brought down inside the box by a Zamalek defender, earning Al Ahly a crucial penalty. Stepping up to the spot, Trezeguet showed composure under pressure, converting the penalty kick to put Al Ahly in front for the first time.
The 2-1 lead was enough for Al Ahly, who held on through a tense final few minutes, securing a vital three points in the league table. The result sees Al Ahly climb to third place, while Zamalek remains at the top of the table.
Zamalek SC still occupies 1st position with 17 points from 8 matches, but Al Ahly SC has made some ground up, moving to 3rd on 15 points and a game less.
