Algeria Secures 2026 World Cup Spot with Decisive 3-0 Victory over Somalia

Algeria’s national football team, the Desert Foxes, secured their qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a commanding 3-0 victory over Somalia on Thursday. The win, staged at the Miloud Hadefi Olympic Complex, guaranteed Algeria the top spot in Group G of the African qualifiers.

The match saw a starring performance from captain and winger Riyad Mahrez, who was instrumental in the team’s decisive victory. Mahrez, currently playing for Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia, scored one goal and set up the other two, leading the team to their first World Cup appearance since 2014.

Early Goals Set the Tone

Algeria quickly took control of the game, with Mohamed Amoura finding the net in the 6th minute after being set up by Mahrez. Just thirteen minutes later, in the 19th minute, Mahrez turned from provider to scorer, unleashing a fierce strike into the roof of the net to double the lead before halftime.

Amoura Seals Qualification

The second half continued in the same dominant fashion for Algeria. The final blow came in the 58th minute when Mohamed Amoura completed his brace, converting another precise cross from the brilliant Mahrez. The 3-0 result sealed Algeria’s place in the expanded 48-team tournament, which will be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Fourth African Nation to Qualify

Algeria becomes the fourth African nation to directly qualify for the 2026 World Cup, joining fellow North African countries Morocco, Tunisia, and Egypt. This will mark the fifth time the Desert Foxes have participated in the global showpiece, with their best performance being a run to the Round of 16 in 2014.

The victory sees Algeria comfortably finish first in their group, securing their long-awaited return to the World Cup stage after missing out on the last two editions.
