Friendlies: Alvarez scores late to foil the Indomitable Lions at depth
Bryan Mbeumo and Karl Toko Ekambi scored two to poke the Lions ahead but a last gasp equaliser from Kevin Alvarez meant the North Americans ended the game with a tie.
Israel Reyes and Kevin Álvarez converted for the Tricolor who were down on the scoreboard twice, meanwhile, Bryan Mbeumo and Karl Toko Ekambi earlier scored for the Africans, placed 42nd in the FIFA rankings.
Cameroon started better; the lads of Rigobert Song took advantage of the speedsters down the wings and dominated in the middle of the field, but Mexico managed to balance the action.
In the 37th minute, Luis Romo made a mistake at the back, which the Africans took advantage of, with a cross turned shot from Mbeumo, making it 0-1.
Mexico was patient, went for the tie and at 45’+2′ they did equalised with a goal from Reyes, courtesy a pass from Roberto de la Rosa.
At the start of the second half, Cameroon let go of a chance to take advantage, when at the 48 minute when Olivier Mbaizo put a ball through for Nicolas Moumi Ngamaleu, who was erratic in the definition.
At 61st minute, the Mexican goalkeeper, Luis Malagón, who played due to an injury to Carlos Acevedo, made a brutal mistake that cost Mexico to concede a second goal; the ball slipped under the goalkeeper’s legs and Ekambi made it 2-1 for the Lions with the slightest of touches.
Cameroon handled the ball well against a Mexico that went on the attack with few fruits until 90’+4′ when Álvarez scored from the right on a pass from Henry Martín.
Mexico’s record now reads two wins and a draw in games against Cameroon. It was the last game for the El Tri before facing the United States next Thursday in the Nations League Semifinal.
