Angola’s team profile at AFCON 2025
The Palancas Negras (Black Antelopes), enter the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco during a period of transition and high expectation. After a historic performance in the previous tournament, the team is looking to solidify its status as a rising giant in African football under new leadership.
Historical Performance and Tournament Record
Angola made its debut on the continental stage in 1996 and has since appeared in the tournament ten times. For much of their early history, the Palancas Negras were seen as a team that struggled to move past the group stages. However, the late 2000s marked a turning point when they reached the quarter-finals in 2008 and again in 2010.
Their most recent campaign in the 2023 edition was arguably their most impressive to date. They topped a challenging group and secured their first-ever knockout victory by defeating Namibia 3–0 in the Round of 16. Although they were narrowly eliminated by Nigeria in the quarter-finals, that run revitalized the nation’s footballing pride and set a high bar for the 2025 edition.
Coach Profile: Patrice Beaumelle
While much of the recent success was built under former coach Pedro Gonçalves, Angola recently appointed the experienced Frenchman Patrice Beaumelle to lead them into this tournament. Beaumelle is a household name in African football, having served as the longtime assistant to the legendary Hervé Renard during championship-winning campaigns with Zambia in 2012 and Ivory Coast in 2015.
Beaumelle’s coaching style is rooted in tactical discipline and a “team-first” philosophy. He is known for a pragmatic approach that prioritizes defensive organization and mental resilience, but he also excels at utilizing the natural technical flair of his players to create rapid transitions. He often emphasizes that talent must serve the collective group, a mindset intended to harness Angola’s individual brilliance into a cohesive unit that is difficult to break down.
Players to Watch
The squad selected for the 2025 tournament features a potent blend of European-based stars and clinical finishers who were instrumental in their recent quarter-final run.
The attacking threat is spearheaded by Gelson Dala, a seasoned forward whose intelligence and movement in the final third make him one of the most dangerous players in African football. He is perfectly complemented by the physical presence of Mabululu, the veteran striker whose ability to find the net from half-chances—exemplified by his spectacular CAF Goal of the Year winner against Namibia—remains a vital asset. On the flanks, the explosive speed and dribbling of Zito Luvumbo, currently thriving in Italy’s Serie A with Cagliari, provides the team with a world-class outlet for counter-attacks.
Defensively, the team has been bolstered by the inclusion of David Carmo, a commanding center-back whose height and composure on the ball bring a level of European elite experience to the backline. In the middle of the park, the “engine room” is anchored by Manuel Cafumana, whose relentless work rate and defensive screening allow more creative figures to dictate the tempo of the game.
Group B: Schedule and Venues
Angola has been drawn into Group B, a highly competitive group featuring a mix of regional rivals and the continent’s most successful nation.
The Palancas Negras will open their campaign on December 22, 2025, with a high-stakes Southern African derby against South Africa at the Grand Stade de Marrakech. They will remain in the same historic city for their second fixture on December 26, 2025, where they face Zimbabwe in another crucial regional clash. For their final group stage match on December 29, 2025, the team will travel to the coastal city of Agadir to face the record-breaking Egypt at the Grand Stadium of Agadir, a match that could ultimately determine who advances as the group leader.
