AWCON Q: Mapepa’s Goal Sends Zambia To Morocco

The Copper Queens of Zambia have made it through to the Women’s AWCON tournament after their one-all draw against Namibia in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The result sees Zambia through to only their fouth participation in the competition after; 1995, 2004 and 2018.

Africa’s lone representatives at last year’s summer Olympics were heading out, until Mapepa struck at the 70th minute to cancel out Namibia’s early goal that came through Emma Naris.

The Shepolopolo held on to qualify with the aggregate score (1-1), having tied for nothing (0-0) at the Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka, in the first leg.

Zambia pride themselves as one of the most improved teams in the COSAFA region, but the stage is now set for them to go just that tiny little step further, and why not, claim a major silverware. Zambia’s best performance in the AWCON was in 1995 when they played the quarter finals. The Shepolopolo will hope to better that record come July, in Morocco.
