Biennial FIFA World Cup: CAF ‘Sheepishly’ Backs FIFA

By Ngome Michael

The Confederation of African Football, CAF has voted in favor of the FIFA World Cup taking place after every two years.

This is one the major fall outs of the 13th Extraordinary General Assembly currently going on in Cairo, Egypt.

Read by FECAFOOT interim President, Saidou Mbombo Njoya (CAF fourth vice president) the idea has sparked a lot of controversy on the continent as the fate of African Cup of Nation is unknown, plus the fact that Europe and South America are strongly against the World Cup being staged after every two years.

Reports from Egypt equally Suggest the Confederation’s approval of an African Super League, that has been described by several stakeholders as the competition, for ‘a selected few.’

All these come at time when Patrice Beaumel, head coach of the Ivorian National Team aired worries of Africa presenting just five teams at the FIFA World Cup finals.

The Extraordinary General Assembly of CAF is attended by FIFA President Gianni Infantino and Director of FIFA football Development, Arsene Wegner.
