Breaking: Fabris Ondoa set to start ahead of Man. U star, Andre Onana
Unless for a last minute change, Fabris Ondoa will start Cameroon’s last AFCON group C encounter this evening against the Gambia, sportglitz can confirm.
The Olympique Nimes shot-stopper replaces Manchester United’s Andre Onana, who played against Senegal on game day 2.
Onana conceded 3 goals and reports from the locker room suggested that most of the players wanted to play with Ondoa in goal, especially as Onana did not camp prior to the competition.
Andre Onana finally touched down in Cote d’Ivoire for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations on January 18. However, he missed the opening Group C game between the Indomitable Lions and the Syli National of Guinea.
In his absence, deputy goalkeeper Fabrice Ondoa started for the five-time African champions, who were held by ten-men Guinea (1-1) in Yamoussoukro.
The president of the Cameroon Football Federation – Samuel Eto’o, alongside the Indomitable Lions staff, have taken the radical decision to drop the Man. U star.
It hasn’t been the easiest decision to take, as further reports from Onana’s clan points out that the 27-year-old could be returning to his club.
Cameroon need a win against Gambia to keep hopes of making it through to R16 as at least one of the four best runners-up.
