CAF CL: 5-Star Sundowns Overwhelm Ahly
Mamelodi Sundowns hammered Egyptian giants Al Ahly 5-2 on match day 4 of the TotalEnergies CAF champions league on Saturday March 12.
Things have turned sour for Al Ahly, the reord holders of the competition (10 titles) after they sank 5-2 in Pretoria on the patch of Mamelodi Sundowns.
Mohamed Sherif quickly equalised at the 13th minute after Marcelo Allende had given the locals an early lead at the 3rd minute.
Making his return to the starting 11 with the armband, Themba Zwane gave the South African representatives the lead again at the 24th minute. 5 minutes before the pose, Teboho Mokoena’s spectacular strike bamboozled goalkeeper El Shenawy and opened the Downs’ lead to two.
After the break, former Sundowns forward Percy Tau rekindled hope for the visitors one minute after the hour mark but a double from Peter Shalulile at the 73rd and 88th minute overwhelmed the Egyptians.
While the result carries Mamelodi Sundowns to the quarter-finals, Al Ahly no longer have destiny in hand. The Red Devils will be forced to beat already eliminated Cotonsport in the next match day, while praying that Sudanese representatives Al Hilal do not beat Sundowns, before possibly a huge game against Al Hilal in Cairo on the last day.
Often in diesel mode, the Egyptian giants have already experienced difficulties in the group stage in recent years, in particular due to its participation in the Club World Cup, which complicates its start, but this time the situation is serious.
