CAF CL: Wydad Climb Top In Group A Despite Early Scare

Last year’s TotalEnergies CAF champions league winners Wydad Athletic Club of Casablanca are now top of group A despite a slender 1-0 defeat on game day one against JS Kabylie.

Wydad leapfrogged AS Vita club one-nil on Friday, March 3, in a delayed day 3 fixture of the champions league.

The Moroccan outfit lined up a second victory at the expense of Vita Club. A win that usher the Red and white half of Casablanca to top of group A with 6 points.

After utter dominance in the first half, without being able to get any end product, Wydad stepped on the gas pedal in the second stanza, and managed to score through an own goal orchestrated by Mohamed Ounajem.

Minutes after the latter was thrown into the fray, he struck the ball decently which ricocheted off Mfingi Magema and went in at the 55th minute.

Wydad switched to game management mode and the rest of the game was pedestrian. Vita had chances afterwards but the Congolese couldn’t really test Reda Tagnaouti. Wydad leads group A with 6 points, followed by Petro Luanda and JSK with 4 points each. Vita are rock bottom 3 points, but nothing is done yet with 3 more games to go.
