CAF Women’s CL: AS FAR Defeats Sundowns In Repeat Of Last Year’s Final
AS FAR of Morocco won its first CAF Women’s Champions League title as they revenged against Mamelodi Sundowns ladies on Sunday.
FAR’s mission was eased by Ibtissam Jraïdi, who scored a remarkable hat-trick, helping her side to victory and taking home the match ball – at the Stade Moulay Abdellah.
First, it all started badly for the South Africans, who conceded just 16 minutes, when Fatima Tagnaout struck.
Despite FAR’s efforts, the Downs Ladies went into the break just a goal down.
In the second half, things got worse for Mamelodi when captain Zanele Nhlapho picked up a second yellow card, synonymous with red in the 51st minute. It meant Sundowns was reduced to 9 ladies, after Rhoda Mulaudzi had received a matching order at the 36th minute.
FAR took the opportunity to double their lead at the 54th minute, with Jraïdi getting her team’s second.
Despite being two goals behind, Sundowns kept being enterprising, leaving gaps behind. Their offensive ambitions penalized them, as Jraïdi took advantage of it at the very end of the game to kill the match. She scored twice in 4 minutes in the 88th and 92nd minutes.
With the 4-0 victory, AS FAR rises to the roof of women’s football in Africa. A revenge on the same patch, where South Africa had won Morocco in the final of the 2022 Women’s AFCON disputed earlier this year.
As for the Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies, they can blame themselves for having badly managed this final game of the competition.
