CAF Women’s CL: Sundowns Go Top, Vihiga Bounces Back In Group B

Kenya – outfit Vihiga Queens defeated AS FAR 2-0 in the first of two games in the ongoing CAF Women’s Champions League in group B, on Tuesday.

It came as a shock defeat to AS FAR, especially as they had played some exquisite stuff on day 1 against Rivers Angels, and were temporal group leaders, until Vihiga Queens came along.

Violet Wanyonyi raised the curtains with 8 minutes on the clock. The goal eased up some tension as Vihiga started playing at their pace, and left – AS FAR, the North Africans, chasing the game for chunks

7 minutes after the pose, striker Jentrix Shikanga extended the lead to two – nil. Officials of the game came under loads of stick for what many believe was poor officiating, denying AS FAR’s ‘clear goal’ due to the unavailability of the Video Assistant Referee.

Nigerian juggernauts – River Angels bowed once more to a second defeat in the competition, to Mamelodi Sundowns.

Just like they had done on match day one, leapfrogging Vihiga Queens, Sundowns triumphed over Angels courtesy of the same scoreline.

The lone scorer for Sundowns on the day was Zanele Nlapho, who buried past Charlot Adjei at the 16th minute, and that, was pretty much that.

The dynamics of group B changes with Sundowns replacing AS FAR at the top, but everything remains possible in the group. Even Rivers Angels mathematically are not written off.

Group B standings;

Mamelodi Sundowns 6 pts, GD +2
Vihiga Queens 3 pts, GD +1
AS FAR 3 pts, GD +1
Rivers Angels 0 pts, GD -4
