CAF Women’s CL: Sundowns Ladies maul Atletico d’Abidjan En Route to semi-final

Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies maintained their flawless run in the CAF Women’s Champions League as they got a 3-0 victory over Athletico d’Abidjan at the Stade Amadou Con Coulibaly in Korhogo, Ivory Coast, on Saturday, 10 November 2023.

There were no goals for much of the game but that changed late in the second half. It was an own goal by Atlético d’Abidjan’s Matoba Cissé in the 77th minute that put Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies ahead.

As a team that doesn’t rest on it’s laurels, it didn’t take long before Refilwe Tebogo made it 2-0. Three minutes later Tebogo scored a brace, ensuring her team gets the win over their opponents.

“I’m keeping an eye on what the other top scorers are doing. There’s a lot of talent, it’ll be an exciting battle,” Tebogo said after the game.

In the first half, Banyana Ba Style had a few chances to take the lead, but weren’t able to perfect the finishing, resulting in misses for the visiting team.

The second half was a period of Sundowns Ladies’ dominance, which ultimately paid off as they sealed the victory and finished top of the group.

Ivorians Atlético d’Abidjan, on the other hand, have endured a dismal tournament, failing to register a single point or a goal.

Given the 2021 champions dominance in the competition, Sundowns Ladies are once again the favourites to win this year’s edition of the continental club tournament.

Sundowns Ladies coach Jerry Tshabalala speaking after the game said that he was happy with his team’s run so far.

“We have achieved our first goal. I am satisfied. (On the prospect of facing AS Far in the semi-final) We are ready to face any team, AS Far or others.”

Sundowns Ladies will face Moroccan side ASFAR in the semi-finals on Wednesday, Nov. 15.
