Cameroon Cup: last playoff survivor Canon, dumped out by Fovu
Fovu Club dug deep and defeated 2023 MTN Elite One bronze medalists Canon, 7-6 on penalties, after one-all parity in regular playtime.
Fovu Club of Baham came from a goal down and saved two penalty match-points to eliminate Canon of Yaounde in the round of 16 of the Cameroon cup.
The game was one of two games at the Bepanda Annex number 1 stadium and it went on to quench the anxiety of football fans, at least, for the neutrals, as it appeared back-and-forth for both sets of fans.
Souleymanou Aboubakar’s Canon took the lead at the 15th minute courtesy a perfectly taken free kick from 30 yards by Nkoue Junior. The full-back converted after a rather avoidable foul on Ngong Neville In Fovu’s half.
15 minutes after, Canon charged down Fovu and a quick turn over let to a lovely give-and-go between Tchike and Bahazar, but the latter missed from close range.
Fovu had their first chance at the 35th minute when a hesitation from Bahazar led Wilfrid Nana clean on goal, only for the erstwhile NGV forward to strike directly into Mbayinaissem. Seconds after at the other end, Eyango Priso completely missed his attempted volley, and coach Guy Bertin Djiepnang had seen enough to make changes.
The gaffer brought in Aboubakar Mohamed and Alex Nandje, which changed the complexion of the game.
Fovu’s reply was instant after the pose. The West side scored through Stephane Ikpeme at the 48th minute.
The 2001 and 2010 winners of the Cameroon cup went all out in search of a winner in the dying minutes of the game.
At the 84th minute, in what was a carbon copy of Canon’s converted free kick, Fovu came close under same circumstances.
Ikpeme stroke the ball cleanly and Mbayinaissem let go before saving Bekeng’s eventual shot from close range.
Fovu went on to win 7-6 on penalties. Essama, Baliang and Kouassi missed their penalties for Canon. Fovu’s Stephane Ikpeme and Cyrille Ngando equally missed, but the 2021 CAF inter-club representatives managed to survive two match points.
