Captain Ndidi Pledges Personal Funds to Avert Super Eagles Strike

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have narrowly avoided a full-scale strike at the ongoing AFCON 2025 tournament in Morocco following an intervention by team captain Wilfred Ndidi. With the national team preparing for a quarter-final clash against Algeria, internal tensions reached a breaking point this week over unpaid winning bonuses. The dispute involved payments for four consecutive victories against Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, and Mozambique, leading the squad to initially refuse to travel from their base in Fes to Marrakech.

Captain, Wilfried Ndidi has stepped forward to stabilize the camp and prevent a boycott of the fixture. The Besiktas midfielder personally addressed the players and coaching staff, urging them to prioritize the national mission and maintain their focus on the pitch. Most notably, the captain issued a  pledge, committing to personally cover the outstanding bonuses from his own funds if the Nigerian authorities fail to settle the debt by Saturday.

Ndidi emphasized that he has been imploring the team to continue their preparations since the tournament’s second match, stating that he refuses to allow administrative delays to sabotage the team’s momentum at such a vital stage.

The Nigerian government and the National Sports Commission have since moved to address the captain’s concerns and de-escalate the situation. The Minister of State for Finance, Doris Uzoka-Anite, confirmed on Thursday that all group-stage bonuses have been released and are currently being processed through the Central Bank of Nigeria. Officials explained that the delay was primarily a bureaucratic issue caused by the process of converting the funds into foreign currency to satisfy the players’ preferences.

Despite the government’s assurances that the funds are in flight and should reflect in player accounts within forty-eight hours, the atmosphere in the camp remained fragile until Ndidi’s personal guarantee. For many Nigerian football observers, this incident is a frustrating echo of past administrative failures, including a similar bonus row during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers just months ago. However, the captain’s willingness to put his own resources on the line has provided the psychological security the squad needed to board the flight to Marrakech.

With the Super Eagles set to settle in their new base for Saturday’s showdown at the Stade de Marrakech, the focus has finally shifted back to football. While the threat of a strike has been averted, the pressure remains on the Nigeria Football Federation and the Federal Government to deliver on their promises. For now, the Spirit of the captain has ensured that the three-time champions remain on track in their pursuit of a fourth continental title.
