CHAN 2023: Hosts Algeria And Mozambique Qualify From Group A

Eliminated after their defeat against Mozambique a few days ago, Libya finished group A matches of the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) in the most honorable way.

Opposed to Ethiopia on Saturday, the Mediterranean knights won 3-1 and took their opponents out of the competition.

Headed for a scoreless draw at the break, Gatoch Panom opened the score for Ethiopia in the 39th minute on a penalty. But Libya, who didn’t want to let go without consolation despite being eliminated, reacted and equalized in the 44th minute through Ali Nouri Mohamed (1-1) at the break.

Upon resumption, the Ethiopians were surprised by a second goal scored by the Mediterranean Knights, which broke the tie. It came courtesy a finish by Abdulati Al Dhawi at the 50th minute.

A third goal from TotalEnergies man of the match Anis Saltou in the 78th minute put an end to the hopes of Ethiopia who were eliminated, just like Libya. Mozambique that went through to the quarter-finals despite their defeat against Algeria (1-0). It is only the second time in the tournament finals that Algeria progresses out of the group after the 2011 edition where Libya ended fourth.

Mozambique created history as they made it out of the group phase for the first time since the tournament’s inception in 2009. Their best finish prior was qualifying for the group phase in 2014.
