CHAN 2023: Saidou Alioum Pre-selects 30 With Bawak & Eno

With the MTN Elite One and Two Championships set to resume on December 21, Intermediate Lions coach Saidou Alioum has released a list of 30 players and 7 reserves, set to be trimmed to 26.

There’s absolutely no doubt that 25 of 26 players called up to play Cameroon’s farewell game before the world cup finals in October have made the list, with few additions. The most experienced of them all is PWDs Thomas Etta Bawak, who has played two previous CHAN competitions in 2016 and 2018. There is equally the presence of Cotonsport’s Brandon Eno,who has caught the eye with brimming performances this campaign. However, the league’s lead goalscorer, Amih Renzoh doesn’t make the cut. Regulars like Moukoko Yves, Che Malone, Marou Souaibou and Ngom Mbeleki keep their places. Fresh from the World cup, Ngom Mbeleki and Marou will need to show what they brought home from the Qatar expedition.

The 2022 African Nations Championship, known as CHAN 2022 for short and/or the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship for sponsorship, will be the 7th edition of the biennial association football tournament organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), featuring national teams consisting of players currently playing in their respective local leagues.

Originally scheduled from 10 July to 1 August 2022, CAF rescheduled the tournament to January 2023 following an announcement at an executive committee meeting held on 10 September 2020 via video conferencing, citing the postponement of the 2020 African Nations Championship to 2021 and the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations to 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Africa as well as the already-scheduled 2022 FIFA World Cup in November–December 2022.

Cameroon qualified for the competition after turning over a 1-0 defeat to win 2-0 with goals from Djawal and Marou against Equatorial Guinea in March
