Clinical Elephants Charge Past Stallions into AFCON Quarterfinals
Ivory Coast remains on track to defend their continental crown after a dominant 3-0 victory over Burkina Faso at the Grand Stade de Marrakech on Tuesday. The “Elephants” showcased a blend of veteran composure and youthful spark to brush aside their West African neighbors and secure a high-stakes quarterfinal date with Egypt.
Amad Diallo Takes Center Stage
From the opening whistle, the defending champions dictated the tempo. The breakthrough arrived in the 20th minute through Manchester United winger Amad Diallo. After weaving through the Burkinabé defense, Diallo slotted a precise finish past goalkeeper Hervé Koffi.
Despite a brief VAR review for a potential foul in the buildup, the goal stood, and Ivory Coast never looked back. Diallo’s influence only grew as the half progressed; in the 32nd minute, he turned provider, laying off a clever ball for 19-year-old Yan Diomande, who doubled the lead with a curled strike into the bottom corner.
Burkina Faso’s Missed Moments
The Stallions were not without their chances. Brentford’s Dango Ouattara proved to be the biggest threat for Burkina Faso, nearly clawing one back just before halftime when his powerful effort rattled the woodwork.
However, the Ivorian backline—anchored by Evan Ndicka—remained disciplined throughout the second half. Even as Burkina Faso coach Brama Traoré introduced veteran Bertrand Traoré to find a spark, the Ivorian defense held firm, stifling any hopes of a comeback.
Sealing the Deal
The final blow came in the 87th minute courtesy of substitute Bazoumana Touré. Capitalizing on a late lapse in the Burkina Faso midfield, Touré embarked on a solo run from his own half before calmly finishing past Koffi to make it 3-0.
What’s Next?
With this victory, Ivory Coast becomes the first defending champion to reach the quarterfinals since 2010. They now travel to Agadir for a blockbuster quarterfinal clash against Egypt this Saturday.
“We knew we had to be clinical today,” said captain Franck Kessié after the match. “The road to the title is long, but we are growing stronger with every game.”
