Comoros (0) Gabon (1): Comoros Impressive In AFCON Debut, Gabon Decisive
Without star – striker Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, out-due-to Covid19, Gabon shrugged off AFCON debutants Comoros, for a one – nil victory, in game 2 of group C.
Despite Comoros’ impressive display, the Panthers had the last laugh, and indeed, the most meaningful.
The lone goal of the game came 15 minutes in.
Louis Ameka provided the assist, slotting to the path of Aaron Boupendza, who angled towards the far post for one – nil.
Goalkeeper Ahamada could only stand still, as even the the greatest keepers would watch and applaud Boupendza’s sensational effort.
Comoros got into the game more as it went on.
Coach Amir Abdou tried to change things earlier on in the first half with the introduction of Kassim Ahamada, in place of Abdallah Kassim.
His change was replied by coach Patrice Neveu minutes after, bringing on Serge Junior Bertil, for Louis Ameka.
Comoros’ well planed substitutions looked to lighten things up. There were shouts for a penalty call when El Fardou went down in Gabon’s area at the 61st minute, but referee Peter Waweru played on.
Comoros kept knocking with El Fardou being a menace with every run and shot on goal.
At the 86th minute, second half substitute Eneme Ella, had the ball in the net for what would have been Gabon’s second, but the official on the near side had his flag raised.
From there on, Gabon went in for textbook game management, and the score stayed that way.
Everything is still open in group C, but Morocco and Gabon take the front. Ghana and The Comoros Island are left with no points after day one of action.
