Congolese Legend Mputu Calls Time On His Career

Congolese football legend, Trésor Mputu Mabi has called time on his career aged 37.

It is not a coincidence that Mputu decides to hang his boots just around the time when the African continent readies for the CAF champions league penciled to begin this Friday, February 10.

The Kinshasa native drew the curtain on a career, considered by several sports journalists as one of the most enthralling on the African continent in the last 20 years via a TV interview on Thursday.

The erstwhile Leopard’s forward and TP Mazembe fan favorite formalised the news of his retirement from football fields during an interview accorded Nyota RTV.

Despite Mputu’s immense talent, the man nicknamed ‘the phenomenon’ spent 90% of his career in the DR Congo.

Mputu joined TP Mazembe in 2002, and was a pivotal figure in the club’s success. In 2007, he helped his club reach the African Champions League by becoming the top goalscorer of the competition with nine goals.

In 2009 and 2010 he captained Mazembe to back to back CAF Champions League titles. Through the years Mputu was linked with several European clubs including Arsenal in 2007, but he didn’t move a muscle. The latter won the title of the best player plying on the African continent in 2009. He ends his career with 198 club goals in 329 matches.

With the Congolese national team, he registered 53 caps, and scored 14 goals within that time.

Mputu is also the top scorer in the history of the CAF interclub competitions with 41 goals in total.
