Cotonsport drub Fovu to clinch first ‘New look’ cup winners cup
Cotonsport FC of Garoua defeated 2023 Cameroon cup winners Fovu club of Baham 2-0 on Sunday October 1, to emerge winners of the cup winners cup. It was the first competition win for the Garoua-based outfit since the restart of the competition in the modern era.
18-time Elite One winners Cotonsport of Garoua made amends from a shock exit at the preliminaries of the TotalEnergies CAF champions league, winning its first silverware of the new season.
The men of Daniel Breard put two pass goalkeeper Junior Mbandji in the first half, to seal the game in the first 45 minutes.
Cotonsport put the Fovu backline marshalled by Illiasu and Lovis Acha under loads of duress in the opening excgsnges, and it paid dividends.
A swift move down the right channel from Jean Emmanuel Chamdjou lured Lovis Acha into a rugby tackle in the Fovu area at the 3rd minute.
Patient Wassou stepped up and gave Mbandji the eyes as Cotonsport took the lead via the spot at the 4th minute.
The 2-0 victory in a highly intensed Cameroon cup final was visibly having a toll on the Fovu players.
The very flexible frontline of Cotonsport made up of Aziz Bassane, Chamdjou and Wassou, was relentless.
Four minutes after the half hour mark, Cotonsport Academy graduate, Issa Fadyl burst through the middle with a box of tricks and fed Wassuou, whose square ball landed on the left foot of Bassene for an easy finish for 2-0.
Cotonsport went into the pose with a confident 2-0 lead and the complexion of the game did not change in the second half.
Despite Ndoumbe Bosso’s introduction of a likes of Eric Cantona (who hit the side netting at the 79th minute) and a few other forwards, the scoreline remained unchanged.
Cotonsport travel back to Garoua where they are programmed to take on Victoria United on Thursday 6th, while Fovu are pitted against Apejes at the Bamendzi stadium on Wednesday, October 4th.
