Dazzling Japan Attacks Blitz Colombia, Set Up Quarter-Final Showdown with Holders Korea DPR

Japan delivered a breathtaking display of attacking football, dismantling Colombia to secure a commanding victory and book a mouth-watering quarter-final clash with reigning champions Korea DPR.

Japan quickly asserted its dominance, finding the net in short order as Ua Ono guided a brilliant left-footed strike into the top corner. The second goal showcased world-class skill when Noa Fukushima connected with a cross using the outside of her left foot, steering the ball home.

Colombia simply had no answer for Japan’s dizzying ball movement. Konoha Nakamura tallied the third goal of the night with a composed finish following yet another brilliant team build-up. Fukushima then completed the scoring, netting her second with another sparkling finish using the exterior of her left boot.

Post-Match Reaction

Japan’s camp acknowledged the hard work that secured the win and looked ahead to the monumental challenge of the next round.

“Colombia was a strong team, but we prepared even harder, and I believe that effort helped us secure the win,” said Japan head coach Sadayoshi Shirai. “Our next match against Korea DPR will be very challenging because they’re a very good team. Still, I hope Japan can play some great football and rise to that challenge.”

Goalscorer Konoha Nakamura was pleased with her performance and the team’s style of play.

“Recently, I haven’t been in good form, but today I think I managed to play in a way that’s true to myself. I believe we played our own style, holding the ball and playing our football.”

Despite the heavy defeat, Colombia coach Carlos Paniagua found positive takeaways from the tournament experience.

“It hurts, obviously, but overall, we also have positive feelings at the end. This is very important for us because our players managed to play around 20 international matches, including these four in the World Cup, and all those are positive sensations… today we were defeated by a team much superior to us, they were much better from start to finish.”
