DR Congo Edges Nigeria on Penalties to Reach Inter-Continental Playoffs
In a dramatic final of the African World Cup qualifiers playoff, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) secured their place in the inter-continental playoffs after defeating Nigeria 4-3 on penalties. The intense match, held in Rabat, Morocco, finished 1-1 after extra time.
Match Highlights
The Super Eagles started strong, with Frank Onyeka finding the net just three minutes into the game to claim an early lead for Nigeria. However, the Leopards fought back, and Meschak Elia leveled the score in the 32nd minute, capitalizing on a defensive error by Wilfried Ndidi. Nigeria suffered a significant setback when star striker Victor Osimhen was forced off with an injury at halftime. Despite chances for both sides, including two disallowed goals for DR Congo, neither team could break the deadlock in the second half or extra time, pushing the contest to a tense penalty shootout.
The shootout saw heroics from DR Congo’s substitute goalkeeper, Timothy Fayulu, who was brought on specifically for the occasion and made two crucial saves. DR Congo captain Chancel Mbemba then stepped up to convert the winning penalty, securing the 4-3 victory for the Leopards and sending his team through to the next round.
Road Ahead
With this victory, DR Congo advances to the six-team FIFA Inter-Continental Playoff tournament scheduled for March 2026. This mini-tournament, which will take place in Mexico, offers the final two spots for the 48-team FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The win keeps DR Congo’s dream of reaching the World Cup finals alive, a feat they have only achieved once before in 1974 (as Zaire). Meanwhile, Nigeria’s loss means the Super Eagles will miss out on the inter-continental opportunity.
