Dr. Joseph Kabungo Mysteriously Dies After Nigeria-Ghana Game

Dr. Joseph Kabungo, stationed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), for doping control during the Nigeria – Ghana match, died in unclear circumstances after the game.

The Football Federation of Zambia (FAZ) officialized the latter’s death via a statement on Wednesday. ‘Doctor Joseph Kabungo – who worked for the African Confederation (CAF) and FIFA, died on Tuesday evening on the sidelines of the Nigeria – Ghana game in Abuja (1-1), in a fixture for qualification to the World Cup in Qatar,’ part of the statement reads.

Some local sources hold that, Dr. Kabungo, assigned to carry out doping controls after the match, died in the aftermath violence as a result of Nigeria’s elimination, with the Eagles unable to advance in the tie due to Ghana’s away goal. Other sources report a heart attack, unrelated to a crowd movement.

The Football Association of Zambia awaits a detailed report, so as not to point accusing fingers in vain: “It is too early to dwell on the details of the cause of his death, but we will await for a full report from CAF and FIFA on what exactly happened,” president Andrew Kamanga ended.
