Elite One: Eding Get Their ‘Pound Of Flesh’ Against Coton In Repeat of 2022 Final
In an advanced group A match day 13 encounter of the MTN Elite One, Cotonsport of Garoua fell to Eding Sports in a repeat of last year’s Elite One final. Both teams had met in the first round of the season in Garoua and it ended zero-all.
The lone goal of the game came deep into the second stanza courtesy of wideman Harrison Djonkep at the 86th minute.
Eding had a bitter pill that needed to be sorted and they got their revenge over the 17-time Elite One winners Cotonsport of Garoua at the Ngoa Ekelle stadium on Wednesday.
Cotonsport started the game as group A leaders after a one-nil victory over Renaissance in last weekend’s action. Another victory would have taken the Garoua-based outfit 5 points clear from runners-up Colombe (with two games more than the rest of the chasing pack).
It wasn’t meant to be for Gabriel Haman and his lads who squandered loads of opportunities especially in the first 45.
New recruit, Emmanuel Igboeri struck the upright in the 43rd minute from a delightful Daman Abdouraman cross and that was as clear a chance as Cotonsport had all game long.
Coach Bonaventure Djonkep’s charges held on and made the breakthrough at the 86th minute to take all three points from the reigning, defending Elite One champions.
Harrison Djonkep, Fernandez Edjimbi and Prince Sime were the only survivors from the Eding side who lost the crown to Cotonsport last term.
Eding lost the final of the MTN Elite One championship last season on penalties, with Cotonsport now having four players from that Eding Sports side in its rank.
Cotonsport maintain top position in group A but a slip off is likely having played two games more because of their continental involvement. Eding Sports meanwhile move to fourth in group A with 17 points.
Complete Match day 12 games of the MTN Elite One will be played over the weekend.
