Elite One: Triumphant return for Victoria United in the big time
Two goals of utter class in 6 minutes from forward Richard Nji, condemned the “FAYA” boys of Fauve Azur – to a defeat in the season’s opener in pool B.
Back amongst the big boys after a 19-year absence, it seemed as though south west outfit Victoria United was never away.
Considered by most book makers as the dark horses in this season’s championship, Victoria United put an accomplished Elite One side (Fauve Azur) to the sword on Wednesday, September 27, at the Ngoa Ekelle stadium.
Opopo dominated play from the start and carved open the Fauve Azur backline with ease. However, it took a moment of sheer determination from former Option Sports midfeilder, Fils Enopa who chased a loose ball down the byline, and served for Richmond Nji at the 22nd minute, for Opopo to take the lead.
Lightening struck twice with a near remake in the build up to the second goal 6 minutes later. Richmond was found in space between the defensive pair of Tchatou and Ngoupeyou, and he made no mistake from 5 yards.
After the two goals conceded, Fauve Azur stepped up especially with transitional play, using the pace of Kengne and Juste De Bonheur up top.
The reward finally came for the men of Guy Djiepnang at the 41st minute.
Juste De Bonheur hassled Ngu Maxwell before slotting in to half deficit at the 41st minute.
After the resumption, Fauve Azur created numerous chances but failed to concretize.
Coach Guy Kamguia entered game management mode with multiple substitutions once his crew spotted Fauve Azur on the ascendancy.
Victoria United stayed in it and finally took home all 3 points in the opener. The remainder of match day 1 games in pools A and B will follow on October 4, as the top-tier takes steam.
