Eto’o Maintains Song After Disastrous Indomitable Lions 2023 AFCON Qualifiers Results

Rigobert Song will continue as gaffer of the Cameroon men’s senior national team after a draw and a defeat to Namibia on March 24 and 28. The latter has won just three matches in as many games since he took over the team a year ago.

Following the recent disappointing results of the national football teams, a crisis meeting was held at the Hilton hotel in Yaounde, in the presence of all the coaches of the senior men’s and women’s national teams.

For more than 5 hours, Samuel Eto’o, president of FECAFOOT, expressed his disappointment and explained the future challenges for the Indomitable Lions.

Contrary to rumors announced earlier, Rigobert Song was ultimately not fired. To everyone’s surprise, Samuel Eto’o has decided to keep Rigobert Song at the head of the Cameroonian national football team.

At the meeting, all national team coaches were confirmed in their positions. Those who had not yet signed a contract proceeded to sign, thus demonstrating the confidence shown by Samuel Eto’o.

Despite the majority of Cameroonians wanting the dismissal of Rigobert Song, Samuel Eto’o opted not to give in to popular opinion. He clarified that as a leader, he does not decide according to the whims of the people, but according to the objectives to be achieved for Cameroonian football.

The decision to keep Rigobert Song and the other coaches in office is debated within the Cameroonian sports community. It is now crucial for the national teams to raise the bar in the next matches and competitions in order to prove that the confidence granted by Samuel Eto’o has not gone in vain.
