EX city and Milan star, Brahim Diaz handed Atlas Lions’ call
Former Manchester city and now Merengues star, Brahim Diaz has been handed a call by Regragui to participate in the March friendlies for the 2022 World cup semi-finalists, Morocco.
Diaz’s inclusion comes after a period of speculation surrounding his international allegiance between Morocco and Spain.
The forward has been named in Walid Regragui’s squad for the upcoming friendly games against Angola and Mauritania.
The call up ends months of rumors linking Diaz to Morocco’s national team.
Converging reports had indicated the Real Madrid star’s decision to represent Morocco over Spain.
Diaz’s family, especially his grandmother, has come out in support of his choice of the Moroccan national team.
If Diaz plays Morocco’s friendly game against Angola on March 22, his decision to represent Morocco will be sealed.
Fabrizio Romano, the renowned Italian football journalist, has said that Morocco is gearing up for a grand celebration to welcome the new Atlas Lion.
It remains to be seen whether Morocco’s football federation will officially announce Diaz as one of the Atlas Lions.
The squad also sees the return of forward Soufiane Rahimi, whose impressive performances with Emirati club Al Ain convinced Regragui to recall him. However, there are also some notable absences, including captain Romain Saiss.
Another newcomer joining the fold is Eliesse Ben Seghir of AS Monaco. Ben Seghir, like Diaz, has also completed a switch in sporting nationality and will be experiencing his first selection for Morocco.
The Atlas Lions will use these friendlies to prepare for upcoming qualifiers and international tournaments.
Their first test will be against Angola on March 22nd, followed by a clash with Mauritania on March 26th. Both matches will be played in Agadir.
