Exclusive: Antonio Conceicao leads race for Indomitable Lions’ job

sportglitz.com has exclusively gathered that Portuguese trainer, Antonio Conceicao, leads the race to boss the dugout of the Indomitable Lions, over a fortnight after Rigobert Song’s dismissal.

Different possibilities emerged with the inclusion of 5 top names: Antoine Kombouare, Jürgen Klinsmann, Raymond Domenech, Hugo Broos and Antonio Conceicao.

Pending approval from the Head of state, H.E Paul Biya, Antonio Conceicao pops up to be the most likely to claim the job.

Conceicao ready to drop lawsuit and monies won from CAS ruling

For starters, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled in favor of Antonio Conceiçao, fired from his position as Indomitable Lions coach before the end of his contract in February 2022.

He won his case before the highest jurisdictional organisation in sport. FECAFOOT, was found guilty of “abusive breach of contract”.

The Cameroonian football authority was then ordered to pay 1.6 million euros in compensation.

From reliable sources, Conceicao is ready to work with his lawyers so as to break down the financial penalty on Cameroon.

Cameroon looking for continuity and quick results as 2026 World cup qualifiers nears in June

Time is not on the side of the indomitable Lions as they, desperately will, miss out on games in the March FIFA window – in a bid to re-structure the dugout before official world cup qualifying matches in June. “Building a team” may take time, which is exactly what the 5-time African champions do not have on their hands.

A new man at the helm will mean new understanding, dynamic, and play style for the Indomitable Lions. That on its own, leaves Broos and Conceicao (former coaches of the team), as overwhelming favorites.

However, Broos looks out of the equation as he is set to respect his contract with the Bafana Bafana that ends in 2026.

Before the arrival of Rigobert Song,
Conceincao finished third at the Africa Cup of Nations. Conceicao, who was appointed in 2019 also guided Cameroon to the 2022 World Cup qualifying play-offs, leaving the Lions with a two-legged tie against Algeria. He had a record of 14 wins, 8 draws and 2 loses in 24 games.

When the coaching problem is finally solved, Cameroon will play Cape Verde at home on June 3rd, and later travel to Luanda to take on the Angola.

During his tenue, Conceicao played Cape Verde twice; recording a draw and a defeat between 2021-2022, as part of the TotalEnergies AFCON qualifiers.

Cameroon momentarily leads group D of the World cup qualifiers with 4 points, level with Cape Verde and Libya.
