FEGUIFUT suspends AFCON golden boot winner Nsue, and ‘creator in chief’ Salvador

Two of Equatorial Guinea’s star players at the just ended TotalEnergies 2023 AFCON, have been indefinitely suspended.

Until the suspension is uplifted, the pair will not take part in Nzalang Nacional matches.

The Equatoguinean Football Federation announced in an official press release the suspension of Emilio Nsue and Iban Salvador for indiscipline. As quoted in the press release, both players had unpleasant incidents before, during and after the Africa Cup in Côte d’Ivoire.

Equatorial Guinea was one of the biggest surprises at the Africa Cup of Nations. The ‘Nzalang’ stunned fans as they advanced to the round of 16 as group winners, but were knocked out in the last minute by Guinea.

Undoubtedly, one of the big names was Emilio Nsue, an old acquaintance of Spanish football. In fact, the Intercity player was named top scorer of the tournament after scoring five goals during the tournament.

However, at the end of the competition, the Equatoguinean Football Federation announced in a press release structural changes to the squad. One of them was the suspension of both Nsue and Iban Salvador for indiscipline.

According to the statement, the pair were involved in an “unpleasant incident” during the Africa Cup, which required the intervention of the Ivorian police and “caused a significant delay in the team’s return to Equatorial Guinea”, as well as a stain on the national team’s reputation. In addition, they are also blamed for incidents both before and after the tournament.
