FIFA Council Elections: Augustin Senghor; Quality and Quantity!
A historic date looms on the stretch as the FIFA Council Elections nears. March 12, 2025, will mark important changes in the history of African football.
These electoral contests will be of particular interest to Senegal’s Augustin Senghor, candidate for one of the positions of African representatives on the FIFA Council. A candidacy that true lovers of African Football world-wide have supported.
After having served African Football at practically all levels: Federation President for 16 years successively, President of the UFOA A Zone for 8 years, Member of the CAF Executive Committee for 7 years, 1st Vice-President of CAF for the last 4 years, not to mention other positions within the various FIFA and CAF committees since 2009, Augustin Senghor has the profile to sit on the FIFA Council.
Just like he declared before officially joining the Elections race, the time has come to offer his services, skills and experience to the realization of a convergent vision of the two prominent leaders of world football: Gianni Infantino, President of FIFA and Dr. Patrice Motsepe, President of CAF, for a strong and promising African Football in a future.
Senghor’s profile is arguably the most competent in terms of successful applications with his local federation.
At the head of the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) since 2009, Augustin Senghor has transformed the football landscape.
Under his leadership, Senegal has enjoyed resounding success on the field, becoming the first African nation to win five Confederation of African Football (CAF) competitions in a row in less than two years: The AFCON senior trophy won on February 6, 2022 against Egypt in Yaounde; victory of the Beach Soccer Lions in October 2022 in Mozambique (their seventh African Cup of the discipline after 2008, 2011, 2013, 2016, 2018 and 2021), including the fourth in succession; the African Nations Championship reserved for local players (CHAN) won on February 5, 2023 on Algerian soil; the national under-20 team won the AFCON of their category on Saturday, March 11, 2023; Finally, on May 19, 2023, the U17 Lions once again added to the country’s trophy cabinet by winning the first U17 AFCON trophy in Senegal’s history against Morocco (2-1) at the Nelson Mandela stadium in Algiers.
In addition to the results on the field, Augustin Senghor and his team have modernized the management of Senegalese football, with the establishment of quality infrastructures such as the Jules François Bocandé Center in Toubab Dialao, the Youssoupha Ndiaye Center in Guereo, the rehabilitation of the Demba Diop and Lat-Dior stadiums among others. Just to note, Senegal qualified for all CAF competitions in 2025.
It is therefore normal that Senghor now aspires to bring his expertise to the world level, which explains his legitimate candidacy to join the FIFA Council.
