Finished for Finidi as head coach of Super Eagles
It is over for Finidi as head coach of the Super Eagles. The NFF executive committee entered Abuja on Wednesday in a desperate bid to save their own jobs in the aftermath of a catastrophic 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign by the Super Eagles.
After four rounds of matches in a relatively easy six-team group, the three-time African champions are now without a win and languish second from bottom of the standings with Nigeria’s hopes of featuring at the 2026 World Cup in complete shambles.
Their scapegoat is Finidi George, who only last month they had presented to the whole world as the man to lead Nigeria to glory again.
As first reported by sportglitz.com, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have opted to appoint a foreign coach to boss Finidi George in the Super Eagles after a difficult qualifying campaign to the 2026 World Cup.
This is completely against a decision last month to appoint a local coach to meet the wishes of the country’s fans.
“…the Executive Committee resolved to employ an expatriate Technical Adviser for the Super Eagles in the coming weeks, ahead of the (2025) AFCON qualifiers and the remaining FIFA World Cup qualifying matches,” an official statement from the NFF read in part.
In May, former Ajax winger Finidi George was appointed as the country’s new coach after the Portuguese Jose Peseiro ended his time with Nigeria after he led the team to the final of the Africa Cup earlier this year.
However, the Super Eagles now languish second from bottom of Group of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers with three points from four matches.
They are now four points adrift of front runners Rwanda, South Africa and Benin.
