Former Harambee Stars Coach Engin Fırat Passes Away After Sudden Heart Attack

Former Kenya national team head coach Engin Fırat passed away on Monday morning at the age of 55.

The Turkish tactician reportedly suffered a fatal heart attack at Istanbul Airport while in transit from Beirut to his hometown of Adana. His current club, Lebanese Premier League side Nejmeh SC, confirmed the tragic news in a statement, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of a “highly ethical and professionally committed” leader.

A Tenure of Grit and Resilience

Fırat is best remembered in East Africa for his three-year stint at the helm of the Harambee Stars (2021–2024). He took charge during one of the most turbulent periods in Kenyan football history, navigating the team through a FIFA suspension and the challenge of playing home matches in neutral venues like Malawi and Uganda due to stadium infrastructure issues.

Despite the administrative hurdles, Fırat was known for his tactical discipline and his outspoken advocacy for structural reforms in the Kenyan game. One of his standout moments was a memorable 2-1 victory over Qatar in 2023, a result that showcased the potential of the squad under his guidance.

Final Chapter in Lebanon

After leaving the Kenya job in December 2024, Fırat returned to club football with Nejmeh SC in February 2026. Ironically, his final role saw him reunited with several Kenyan internationals, including Austin Odhiambo, Anthony Akumu, and Masoud Juma, who are currently part of the Lebanese side.

Tributes from the Football Fraternity

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed led the tributes, stating, “Our deepest sympathies go to the family and friends of Engin Fırat. His contribution to Kenyan football will be fondly remembered; may his soul find eternal peace.”

He will be buried in Antalya following a funeral service scheduled for tomorrow. His passing marks the loss of a passionate student of the game who never shied away from the difficult tasks in international football.
