Former Indomitable Lions coach Artur Jorge dies at 78
Former Indomitable Lions coach Artur Jorge died in the early hours of Thursday, February 22, sportglitz.com has learned.
Artur will be remembered for his unique play style instilled in the ranks of the Indomitable Lions between 2004-2006, despite not winning any silverware.
The erstwhile Portuguese coach and European champion with FC Porto, died at the age of 78, his family announced in a statement this Thursday.
” It is with deep sadness that the family of Artur Jorge Braga de Melo Teixeira announces his passing, this morning, in Lisbon, after a prolonged illness. He died peacefully, surrounded by his closest family members “, the statement reads.
A Former player himself, Artur Jorge spent most of his career in Portugal, donning the jerseys of FC Porto (1964/65), Académica (1965 to 1969), Benfica (1969 to 1975, becoming four-time champions and winning two Portuguese Cups) and Beleneneses (1975 to 1978).
He was s a coach that distinguished himself, in a long career, which began in 1981 with Belenenses and only stopped in 2016, after coaching Algerian side MC Alger.
He coached Portimonense , FC Porto, Matra Racing, PSG , Benfica, Tenerife , Vitesse , Al Nassr , Al Hilal , Académica, CSKA Moscow , Al Nasr and Créteil-Lusitanos .
At club level, It was at the Dragão where he gained more recognition by winning three championships (1985, 1986, 1999) and the Champions League in 1987, to which he added three Super Cups (1985, 1987 and 1991) and a Portuguese Cup (1991). He also became French champion with PSG, being the second coach to take the Paris club to the top of Ligue 1, in 1994.
Artur was Portugal coach on two occasions (1990 to 1991 and 1996 to 1997). He also worked in Switzerland (1996) and Cameroon (2004 to 2006).
