Former Lions Coach Henri Depireux Dies At 78

Former Belgium International and coach of the Indomitable Lions, Henri Depireux – is no more!

Born on February 1, 1944, he died this Friday morning at the age of 78.

Henri Depireux began his career at FC Liège in 1963, then played for Standard (where he was champion in 1969, 1970 and 1971), Racing White, RWDM, before returning to FC Liege.

Bas-Oha and FC Tilleur followed, where he ended his career as a professional player in 1980.

He had two caps in the national team (in 1969 against Mexico in a friendly and in 1971 against Scotland in qualifying for the Euro).

After a descent career as a player, the latter entered coaching.

On the African continent, Henri Depireux is well known.

The technician was coach of the Indomitable Lions between 1996 and 1997.

With him, the Cameroonian selection qualified for the final phase of the 1998 World Cup in France and for the 1998 AFCON in Burkina Faso.

In Morocco, the Belgian also coached FAR Rabat (1997-1998) and won a Throne Cup as well as the African Cup in 1998.

From 2006-2007, Henri Depireux was the gaffer of the Leopards of DR Congo, which was his assignment on the continent.
