Gabon – Ghana: Allevinah’s Strike Downs Black Stars On The ‘Whistle’

Gabon winger Jim Allevinah struck late to cancel out Andre Ayew’s first half effort, as Gabon held up Ghana, on match day two of group C.

The Black Stars of Ghana thought they were headed right back on the queue in group C of the AFCON 2021, after having led for chunks of the game.

Ghana came into match day two after having lost their opening game against Morocco. Gabon, on her part, came into the encounter after a one – nil victory over Comoros, in the opener.

The scoreline in many ways didn’t paint the complete picture of the game.

Gabon took off flying and nearly cut Ghana cold in the earlier stages. A defensive Mal – function from the Black Stars led to Ecuele Manga, nearly gifting Gabon the lead, at the 5th minute from a set piece.

Despite Gabon’s dominance, it was the Black Stars that took an 18th minute lead.

Completely against the run of play,
Skipper, Andre Ayew, lobbied on the edge of the area, before unleashing a low drive that beat goalkeeper Anonome. The one – nil scoreline flattered Ghana to say the least.

Gabon came out of the pose and still, acted like a menace with every run upfront.

Boupendza flicked the ball for Allebinah who couldn’t get to the ball on time at the 62nd minute, before Wallacot matched Kanga’s sensational drive, with a text book save, minutes after.

Nuveu’s substitutions were paying off, and the much awaited goal for Gabon came at the 88th minute. Clermont Foot winger, Jim Allevinah – took on the Black Stars defense at pace, before expertly striking past Wallacot for 1-1.

After the equaliser, there were some afters, as players of both sets faced – off. The Ghanaian group felt Gabon had over celebrated and perhaps, crossed the line, plus, didn’t respect the fair play rule to hand them back the ball, after Baba Rahman played the ball out.

Nothing is set or done yet for Ghana, as they have a must win game against Comoros that comes up in under four – days.
