Heartbreak for Côte d’Ivoire U17 as Late South Korean Penalty Denies them Victory

Côte d’Ivoire were agonizingly close to securing a vital win in Group E of the  FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup,  at the Football Academy Mohamed VI, only to be denied by a late penalty from South Korea’s Ye-yun Jang in the 83rd minute. The match ended in a 1-1 draw.

The Ivorian side started the game with electrifying pace, stunning their Asian opponents with a goal just two minutes into the contest. Forward Nsira Ouedraogo found the back of the net early, giving Côte d’Ivoire a dream start and an advantage they held for most of the match.

Despite the early setback, South Korea fought hard to find an equalizer throughout the game, pressing the Ivorian defense. Côte d’Ivoire defended resolutely, looking set to hold onto their slim lead and claim a crucial three points in the group stage.

However, the drama unfolded late in the second half. In the 83rd minute, the referee pointed to the spot, awarding South Korea a penalty. Ye-yun Jang stepped up under immense pressure and calmly converted the spot-kick, leveling the score and salvaging a point for the South Koreans.

The late equalizer was a bitter blow for Côte d’Ivoire, who will feel they deserved more from their spirited performance, especially given how long they held the lead. The draw means both teams leave with one point, keeping Group E finely poised as they head into their subsequent fixtures at the tournament.
